08/14/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) -- The New York Yankees will try to put further distance between themselves and the rest of the American League East when they battle the Kansas City Royals tonight in the third contest of a four-game series at Kauffman Stadium.

The Yanks had a prime chance to push their lead over the Tampa Bay Rays to three games on Friday, but suffered a 4-3 setback to the lowly Royals. Billy Butler's fifth-inning home run right before the rains came proved to be the game-winner.

Butler's 11th home run of the season, a shot off the foul pole in right field, helped the Royals snap a five-game losing streak. Yuniesky Betancourt drove in two runs with a double in a three-run second inning.

The rain cut Kyle Davies' start short after five innings. Despite the weather delay, Davies (6-7) improved to 3-0 lifetime against the Yankees after allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks. He struck out four.

Joakim Soria locked down his 32nd save with a scoreless ninth. It was the Kansas City closer's 25th consecutive successful conversion, setting a new team record.

The game lasted over five hours, thanks to two delays that totaled 2 hours, 41 minutes. The first was only 31 minutes, but the second paused the game in the middle of the fifth for more than two hours.

Alex Rodriguez, Robinson Cano and Lance Berkman each drove in a run for the Yankees, who have lost three of five. Dustin Moseley (2-2) also had his start cut short by the rain and allowed four runs on eight hits and three walks in 4 1/3 frames.

The Yankees will try to bounce back with Phil Hughes on the mound this evening. The hard-throwing right-hander is coming off his fifth loss on the season, albeit it was a tough decision to swallow.

The young flame-thrower held the Red Sox to just two runs in six innings on Monday, but he was ultimately outdueled by Jon Lester. In the setback, Hughes scattered six hits, walked one batter and struck out three.

On the road this season, the California native is 5-2 with a 2.61 ERA in eight starts.

In 14 career innings against the Royals, Hughes has surprisingly been ineffective, allowing 12 runs on 19 hits. However, the young hurler grabbed a victory over Kansas City earlier this season by allowing just three runs in 5 1/3 innings of work.

As for the Royals, they will turn to Sean O'Sullivan, who will be looking for his first victory since being traded to KC from Anaheim. The last time O'Sullivan was on the hill he squared off against his former team, and the Angels did not treat him too kindly.

O'Sullivan tossed 6 1/3 innings in Monday's matchup with the Angels, but surrendered six runs on 10 hits. However, he walked just one batter and struck out six.

The right-hander has faced the Yankees twice this season, once with the Angels and once with the Royals. Oddly enough those two outings came in back-to-back starts, as O'Sullivan ended his Angels career against the Bronx Bombers and made his debut for Kansas City against the same team.

In the game for the Royals, which took place on July 25, the right-hander did not fair well at all, allowing five runs on seven hits in five innings. O'Sullivan surrendered two homers as well, but did not walk a batter and finished with three strikeouts.

New York has won eight of 12 matchups against Kansas City since the start of last season.

Pittsburgh earned their passage to the big game by beating their division rival, the Baltimore Ravens, 23-14 in yesterday's AFC Championship Game. Arizona, however, could not sustain their momentum and the Eagles took a 25-24 with 10:45 left to play in the fourth. The Cardinals, with the franchise's first Super Bowl appearance hanging in the balance, mounted a fourteen play, 72 yard touchdown drive that consumed 7:52 off the clock. Warner hit running back Tim Hightower on a short screen for the go-ahead, game clinching score that will forever live in Cardinal infamy.
